How Old is the Earth and is Evolution Upward or Downward?


Proof of a young earth would destroy the theory of evolution. This chapter, “Old and Getting Better?” addresses the idea that evolution began eons ago and produced an upward advance of change and complexity in the universe. The earth’s age is a critical component of the theory of evolution because, without vast epochs of time, the folly of evolution would be apparent to everyone. The evolution of one species into another has never been observed in all of history; therefore, the changes must have occurred in the unobservable past over billions of years according to the evolutionist. Modern science must point to any indicators or dating methods that suggest such vast ages for the formation of the universe and earth because without them, the theory of evolution is dead.

Imagine how silly it would be to suggest to a classroom of students that the Empire State Building is the product of multiple random explosions occurring in a nearby building materials yard over vast periods of time. Such a suggestion is laughable because all the time in the world couldn’t accomplish such a result and such a preposterous idea violates many basic laws of science (and common sense). However, students nowadays are asked to believe in a theory of evolution that is far more ludicrous than the random construction of such a magnificent edifice because living systems are much more complex than the Empire State Building. Why do they believe in the theory of evolution without question? They have never been exposed to the myriad of scientific facts that argue against it. The theory of evolution is a “sacred cow” of modern science that is protected from destruction at all costs.

As previously mentioned, the Creationist idea of a young earth is anathema to the theory of evolution. Therefore, it is now a foregone conclusion in the scientific community (and the general population) that the earth is billions of years old and that the universe is tens of billions of years old. These conclusions are based mainly upon research in astronomy and geology through calculations involving radioactive decay rates, the speed of light and geological formations – including the fossil record of the geologic column. It has always been assumed that the speed of light has remained constant throughout history and it has likewise been assumed that radiological decay rates have remained constant. Some scientists now believe that the speed of light and radiological decay rates are not constant and if this true, it would totally change the estimates of age. (Refer to update in Part II, Chapter II, “Old and Getting Better?”) Also, the vast majority of physical processes on earth indicate a much younger earth but these are ignored in favor of using anything else that might date the earth at billions of years old. The radiometric dating methods used to establish great ages are often erroneous for a number of reasons (Refer to Part II, Chapter II, “Old and Getting Better?” for reasons and examples) and the dating method of rocks and fossils based upon their location in the geologic column is founded upon unscientific circular reasoning that assumed certain ages of species in the fossil record of the geologic column. (Refer to this chapter, “Old and Getting Better?” for a better understanding of this absurdity).

One of the original components of the classic theory of evolution was the doctrine of “uniformitarianism” which assumed that all natural laws and physical processes occur at the same rate now that they have always occurred in the past. In other words, the formation of mountains, canyons, rivers, glaciers and any anomalies in geology could all be explained by natural processes and local catastrophes having occurred at the same basic rates and levels throughout history. As time and research progressed, it became apparent that there had to be a major cataclysmic event (or events) in the past – unlike anything ever observed in history – that could only explain and account for mass annihilation of life and the current state of the earth.  By then, the idea of a worldwide flood had become laughable in the greater scientific community because of the physical impossibilities of such an event and because of the Biblical connection that such a belief implied. What modern scientists ignore is the fact that the pre-flood world structure and environment was quite different from the post-flood structure and environment. The mechanisms for such an event were there and the evidence is everywhere! (Refer to Part II, Chapter I, to understand the feasibility of a worldwide flood.)
The theory of evolution violates several basic laws of science. Two of these laws, the “1st Law of Thermodynamics” and the “2nd Law of Thermodynamics,” are pillars that stand in opposition to the Theory of Evolution.  The 1st Law of Thermodynamics is also known as the Law of Conservation of Energy and Matter. Basically this law states that the total amount of matter or energy never changes within a closed system. In other words, energy may change from one form to another, but the total amount will always remain the same.  Matter, likewise may be changed from one form to another, but the total mass must always remain the same.  Since this is true, there is no new matter or energy being created or destroyed anywhere in the world today.  It is simply changing from one form to another while the total quantity remains the same.  Once again, this is the most basic law of science and the creationist is in complete agreement with this law. The Second Law of Thermodynamics is also known as the Law of Increasing Entropy or disorder.  This law states that any system that is left by itself will, in time, change from a complex state to a simple state, from an orderly state to a disorderly state, and in the case of energy; from efficient energy to non-efficient energy. We observe this law in action throughout our daily lives.  For example, we know that new clothing will eventually become worn and faded; we also know that our various foods will eventually spoil or lose their nutritional value as time continues.  We see that all things grow old and eventually turn to dust if left to the elements of nature.  It is because of this principle that it is impossible to build a perpetual motion machine because machinery requires a constant outside energy source and continual maintenance in order to operate and, even then, it eventually wears out and becomes nothing more than a pile of rust.

This law of deterioration not only applies to our earth, but, to our entire universe as well.  We know that our sun will burn out someday and that our earth cannot last forever.  The whole universe is running down like a giant clock and if present processes continue, our earth will eventually die a low level “heat death.”  All useful energy will have been reduced to non-efficient, low level heat energy and the universe will have grown cold. Nothing escapes the Second Law of Thermodynamics although some things appear to contradict it.  For example, a building may be constructed of random bricks into a complex structure.  But, that is only because there is a designer, a blue print and energy from outside sources.  In other words, the building cannot construct itself.  And, even though this complex structure is “created,” it is still subject to the second law of thermodynamics because it will eventually crumble and be reduced to dust as it is exposed to the elements of nature.

The “Old and Getting Better” theory of evolution is contrary to basic laws of science. The earth is old but not nearly as old as most believe. Most scientific evidence that suggests a young earth is suppressed because proof of a young earth would destroy the theory of evolution. (By Robert Linkey)
